A decanter is a common principle to screen for sludge dewatering, but the real feed variability, conditioning, cake DS and centrate targets must define the project.

For industrial wastewater or sludge, a decanter may be screened when the suspended solids settle under representative conditioning and can be conveyed to discharge. Define total or dry solids, suspended solids, flocculant type and dose, feed variability, target cake DS and centrate quality. Results from a different sludge or polymer program are not a project guarantee.

What material and process boundary must be identified?

Identify the industry and source stream, upstream treatment, contaminants, TS/DS and suspended solids, oil or abrasive content, chemical conditioning, seasonal or campaign variation and downstream disposal or recovery route.

Do not transfer a result from another grade, plant or supplier without checking that feed preparation, liquid phase, particle behaviour and measurement method match.

Which centrifuge principles should be screened?

When is a pusher route credible?

A pusher is not the default sludge route. Consider a filtering principle only for a defined recoverable granular or crystalline solid that demonstrates screen retention and cake transport.

Screen retention, stable cake formation, continuous transport and acceptable breakage should be demonstrated. A familiar chemical name does not establish those conditions.

When is a decanter route credible?

A decanter review should cover raw and conditioned settling, rheology, abrasive or sticky solids, conveyor transport, feed range, polymer program, cake DS and centrate quality.

Settling response, density difference, rheology, centrate target and screw transport should be reviewed together. Fine solids alone do not guarantee a successful decanter duty.

What should a representative material test record?

  • Sample identity, production source, collection date, storage and conditioning
  • Feed composition, solids, temperature, particle or settling observations and variability
  • Test apparatus, operating sequence, settings and any conditioning aid
  • Preserve representative feed variability and conditioning records.
  • Report chemical dose on a defined basis and record mixing and aging.
  • Use agreed methods for cake DS and centrate solids or quality.
  • Mass-balance boundary, sample locations, analytical methods, raw results and observations
  • Limits of scale-up and open questions for engineering review

How should required results be written?

Which materials and corrosion inputs are required?

Provide contaminants, pH, chlorides or salts, oil, abrasives, temperature, cleaning agents and prior wear or corrosion observations.

Preferred wetted material is a buyer input, not proof of compatibility. Ask the selected source to identify exact component scope, material evidence, fabrication limits, cleaning exposure and exclusions.

Identify biological, chemical, gas, confined-space, aerosol, odor, pressure and area-classification hazards from the project review.

How should material test, FAT and SAT be separated?

Material testing examines separation behaviour. FAT verifies the agreed factory mechanical, control, safety and document scope. SAT verifies site integration and, when contracted, project performance under a stated feed and utility basis. Do not use a no-load FAT as evidence of cake moisture, recovery or throughput.

What should the technical RFQ include?

Use the sludge fields for TS/DS, suspended solids, flocculant and dose, cake DS, centrate quality and variability; attach lab reports, SDS, P&ID and current operating data.

Unknown values may be marked unknown. Keeping an explicit gap is safer than inserting a catalogue assumption that later becomes a contract conflict.
