Industrial Centrifuge Buyer Guide

Centrifuge Material Selection for Corrosion and Solvents

“Stainless steel” is not a complete corrosion specification. Review every process and cleaning stream against each wetted component, fabrication condition and source evidence.

Direct answer

Create a matrix of every normal, upset and cleaning stream against each wetted component. Include composition and concentration ranges, temperature, pH, chlorides or other contributors, solids abrasion, vapor, cleaning chemicals and contact time. Then require the source to identify exact material grades, fabrication condition, elastomers, coatings or linings, evidence and exclusions.

Why a material grade alone is insufficient

Compatibility depends on the complete environment, temperature, stress and fabrication as well as nominal alloy. Seals, screens, fasteners, welds, wear parts and instruments can have different exposure from the bowl.

A short material test may reveal immediate attack or process interaction but is not automatically lifetime evidence.

Build the stream-component matrix

Materials review structure
Stream / condition Data Components to check
Normal feed Full composition, ranges, solids, temperature and time Feed zone, bowl/basket, conveyor, screen, seals and piping boundary
Upset / shutdown Concentration, settling, drying, temperature and hold time Low points, trapped volumes and exposed internals
Wash / flush Liquid, sequence, temperature and frequency Nozzles, screens, discharge and seals
Cleaning Chemicals, concentration, temperature and duration All wetted components and drainability
Vapor / inert gas Composition, pressure and dew point where relevant Headspace, seals and instruments

Which non-metallic parts need review?

  • Elastomer seals and gaskets
  • Filter cloth or screen support
  • Coatings and linings
  • Hoses, sight parts and instrument diaphragms
  • Lubricant or barrier-fluid compatibility at the defined boundary

How should solvent duty be handled?

Provide solvent identity and composition, water and impurity ranges, flash point, vapor information, temperature and cleaning. Materials review does not replace area-classification, containment, inerting or conformity review.

For CMC and cellulose ether, explicitly identify methanol, IPA or other alcohols, washing sequence, recovery route, nitrogen need and elastomer scope.

What evidence should be requested?

  • Component-level material schedule
  • Material certificates where required by the buyer
  • Fabrication and weld records within the agreed scope
  • Surface, lining or coating specification where applicable
  • Corrosion or compatibility basis and its limits
  • Inspection, NDT or test records requested by the buyer
  • Deviation and substitution approval process

A practical buyer decision path

01

Define

Application, specification, quantity, destination and evidence needs.

02

Compare

Align supplier responses, methods, exclusions and commercial basis.

03

Verify

Check the agreed company, product, document or on-site scope.

04

Control

Record samples, approvals, changes, inspection and shipment milestones.

05

Close

Deliver the agreed record, open-item list and next-step decision.

Why it matters

An unsupported material assumption can affect safety, contamination, wear, maintenance and lifetime. It should be resolved before price and delivery pressure lock the design.

Buyer decision criteria

  • Complete chemistry and concentration range
  • Normal, upset and cleaning temperatures
  • Component-by-component exposure
  • Solids abrasion and erosion
  • Fabrication and weld condition
  • Elastomer and lining compatibility
  • Traceable source evidence and exclusions

Specification checklist

Materials RFQ controls
Field Required wording
Wetted scope List every component and proposed grade
Stream envelope Composition, range, temperature, time and condition
Evidence Document type, component/model scope and revision
Alternatives No substitution without recorded technical review
Acceptance Inspection, records and nonconformity disposition

Document checklist

  • Controlled process and equipment data sheet with revision status
  • Supplier technical offer and line-by-line deviation register
  • General arrangement, interfaces, foundation information and utility list
  • Wetted-material schedule and buyer-requested source evidence
  • Motor, drive, instrument, interlock and control-system documents
  • Inspection and test plan with hold or witness points
  • Material-test, FAT and SAT protocols and records where included
  • Operation, safety, cleaning and maintenance manuals in the agreed language
  • Spare-parts, wear-parts, packing, preservation and shipment-document list

Common mistakes

  • Specifying only “stainless steel”
  • Reviewing the bowl but not seals or screen
  • Ignoring cleaning and shutdown exposure
  • Treating a supplier statement as independent compatibility proof
  • Confusing corrosion resistance with hazardous-area compliance
  • Allowing undocumented material substitution

Questions to ask suppliers

  • Which submitted process inputs and representative tests support the proposed principle?
  • Which assumptions, exclusions and open technical items remain?
  • How are throughput, cake, recovery, liquid quality and wash results measured?
  • Which wetted material applies to each component, and what evidence is available?
  • What is demonstrated during material test, FAT and SAT respectively?
  • Which drawings, manuals, inspection records, spares and commissioning services are included?
  • Which buyer-requested conformity documents are available for this exact source and scope?

Frequently asked questions

Can XiangtanExport recommend one universal alloy?

No. Material selection requires project chemistry, component scope and qualified source or specialist review.

Does a material certificate prove compatibility?

It can identify supplied material within scope; it does not by itself prove suitability for the process.

Should cleaning chemicals be included?

Yes. Include chemistry, concentration, temperature, duration and frequency.

Are elastomers part of wetted materials?

They can be, and should be listed and reviewed where exposed.

Can a short coupon test prove service life?

Not automatically. Record duration, condition, observations and scale-up limits.

Does corrosion review confirm ATEX or IECEx?

No. Explosion-protection and conformity evidence are separate project reviews.
